President William Ruto has defended his decision to give Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua the authority to crack down on cartels that exploit farmers.

Speaking on Sunday January 15 during the interdenominational thanksgiving prayer service at Bomet Green Stadium, Ruto denied claims that the move is intended to end Gachagua’s political career, saying that he is committed to fighting the faceless individuals who exploit farmers.

“Let me be clear, we were elected together with Gachagua and if he falls, both of us will fall,” said Ruto.

He urged DP Gachagua to pursue all cartels that have caused problems to dairy, tea, and coffee farmers, without fear from anyone.

“I know the deputy president is upto to the task and eliminating these cartels so that Kenyans can feel the value of the produce,” he said.

Deputy President Gachagua had earlier requested that the President delegate to him the responsibility of transforming the sectors because he was prepared to do so.

Gachagua revealed that it was only a matter of time before the “cartels” start to flee.

“The people being the exploitations of farmers are big people and have money and I’m wondering why their interests is to make sure the farmers get little money or no money at all. We will face them squarely and before the end of the year things will start moving in the right direction.

“By mid-this year, we will have removed them from the sectors because they stole the money using their own banks,” Gachagua said.

President Ruto had on January 9, issued an Executive Order  appointing Gachagua to be in charge of the coffee sector reforms in the country.

“This Order assigns functions and institutions among Ministries and State Departments as hereunder; and supersedes Executive Order No. 1 of 2022 issued on October 12, 2022.” The order read in part.
